Leather Textile DIY

Leather textiles are beautiful and have the potential to become so many different designs! This article shows you how I designed a leather textile from scraps of leather so that you can do the same. Happy designing!

Step 1: Tools & Supplies

  • Leather Scraps cut into 1 inch width rectangles (or another shape if you want)

  • Ruler

  • Rotary knife or scissors

  • Cutting mat

  • Sewing machine

  • Thread

  • Tape

Step 2: Design Ideation

After you cut the pieces for your textile, arrange them into different patterns to design your textile. Explore and get inspired! I was inspired by rectangles and different grids I could make with different length pieces.

Step 3: Arrangement

Cut a piece of fabric to be the lining/backing to your textile. Then arrange your textile design on top of it.

Step 4: Prep & Sewing

If you pin into leather it will leave a hole, tape is a good alternative. Tape down your textile pieces and then using the zig-zag stitch, sew over the edges of your pieces to secure them to your backing fabric.
